Feminized Cannabis Seeds

Best Top 10 – Feminized Seeds

So you’ve decided to grow marijuana. Perhaps you have dreams of becoming a big time producer, or maybe you just want a plant or two for your own use. But you don’t happen to know anyone who can give you a clone, or you want to try a different strain than your friends have. Germinating from seeds seems to be your only option. You know you don’t want male plants, but the thought of waiting till your seedlings are large enough to distinguish males from females, then throwing those plants out, wasting space, fertilizer and precious space under your lights is enough to make you reconsider the whole idea.

You need feminized seeds.

Marijuana Seedling in Container

What are feminized cannabis seeds?

Just what they sound like. These are marijuana seeds that produce only female plants. The highest quality feminized seeds produce 99.9% female plants.

Why they rock…

  • Less time spent sexing plants.
  • No wasted time or space.
  • No wasted money on extra seeds to ensure you end up with enough females.
  • No wasted fertilizer.
  • Fewer essential site visits for guerilla growers.

Need I say more? Feminized seeds have the potential to make your life as a grower much simpler.

But… Feminized seeds aren’t perfect.

If you’re thinking that feminized seeds sounds too good to be true, here are the (slightly) dirty facts:

Not all feminized seeds are created equal. There are three ways of making feminized seeds and they do not produce the same results. The first two ways are simple; you can do them at home. The last requires a bit more chemistry savvy and is often used by large companies producing seeds in quantity. Here’s how it’s done:

1. Marijuana has evolved a clever trick to help it stay ahead in the survival of the fittest game. When female plants are stressed they can turn into hermaphrodites, growing male flowers in addition to their female flowers. A cross between a hermaphrodite and any other plant tends to result in female offspring. This is how the original feminized seeds were produced.

Hermaphrodite Male Female Flowers

2. Another little trick of evolution allows a female plant that remains unpollinated to grow tiny male flowers and self-pollinate, usually producing feminized seeds.

3. Big producers create feminized seeds by inducing male flowers on female plants using sprayed on chemicals, typically gibberellic acid or colloidal silver (colloidal silver is cheaper and thus more commonly used). Some use hormones instead to achieve the same result. A cross using pollen from these flowers also produces feminized seeds. Some home growers use this method too, by manufacturing their own silverthiosulphate using chemicals sold for photo developing.

Colloidal Silver to Induce Hermaphrodite

Why do you care how feminized seeds were made? Plants, like all organisms, pass on many genetic traits to their offspring. Some females are more prone to turn hermaphrodite than others, and not all will produce the mini male flower as a last ditch propagation effort. These tendencies get passed on to the seeds. What does that mean to you?

Feminized seeds produced from naturally occurring hermaphrodites will have a stronger tendency to turn into hermaphrodites themselves. This means male flowers. Exactly what you were trying to avoid by buying feminized seeds!

This is not the end of the world. You have options. You can buy or make seeds using chemicals or hormones, which will be less likely to turn hermaphroditic. However, not all feminized seeds on the market are of the same quality. Using a professional, reliable seeds producer is essential to reduce the occurrence of hermaphrodites. Check out the 10 best feminized seeds below to see our recommendations on where to find top notch seeds.

You can also follow a few simple steps to keep your plants from getting stressed out.

Your Low Stress Growroom

It is not too hard to keep your female plants happy. No seeds are 100% hermaphrodite proof, so it is best to follow these guidelines no matter which seeds you are using.

  • Use more nitrogen (N), less potassium (K). Learn all about Nutrient NPK Ratio.
  • Use more blue spectrum light and less red spectrum light. Learn all about Marijuana Lighting.
  • Maintain a pH of 6.6 to 6.8. Check out pH Levels and Health.
  • Keep temperatures lower and humidity higher. For specifics see Temperature, Ventilation and CO2.
  • Give your plants a dark period. Too much light can induce the formation of hermaphrodites.
  • Most importantly: keep it low stress! No sudden changes in temperature or humidity, no cloning, avoid irregular light schedules and monitor pH levels. You may want to try the Low Stress Training Technique to improve your yields without pruning.

To sum it all up…

Feminized seeds, while not infallible, can make growing your plants from seeds a lot easier. Even with feminized seeds it is very useful to know how to sex your plants. You still have to pay attention to your conditions, and don’t get too upset if you end up with a hybrid. Pull it out and soldier on! Make sure to clean your room thoroughly if a male plant does show up, to remove any pollen that may be lingering.

Keep in mind: cloning is the best way to ensure the gender of your plants. You can always start with feminized seeds and then clone your best plants after that. Using feminized seeds is a great way to start out for new growers and can cut down on time, waste and stress for even the most experienced grower.

  2. gdog says:

I have two feminized seeds that produced two seedlings each. Is this a bad sign (Bernie’s) or could they both still be females?

  3. tacomakush says:

Yes pull hermys out right away and just wash everything down and you’ll be fine unless you want to keep hermys for seeds but why when you can clone its fast and easy
and as for all the bull on hear I can’t believe all the disrespect on here if someone has a question about a grow come on. No matter how small we all had to start somewhere and the people talking trash are realy the ones who have never even seen a real garden and just quoting shit they read off the web so if you want advice from a real grower ask all you want .

hay man, u seem like one of the better people on this site so i thought id ask you some things. ive just brought a complete grow tent kit designed for six plants with a 600w hps bulb. this is my first go so this was the plan, if you could comment/advise me on how good/bad it is that would be grate….here goes.
so i got the tent set up, filter everything working nice. going for a indica typer, see of green method. i was gonna use soil/peate as medium but hear it effects taste? greminate seeds the in 20 hours of light each day with 4 total dark till plant is 12-18inch then force flower with 12/12 light&dark. leave till the little hairs go dark, slightly longer than most would as its not thc im after so much but rather cbd or whatever its called (stuff that makes u tripp, too stoned to remember lol) and last week before harvest flush with pure water to get rid of all the plant foods.
as for plant food ive no idea! and do you know anything about these things you can add to help with the flavour? high grade in the uk is a joke….£20 for 1.6g and half the time it aint high grade and its always green and wet where it hasnt been dryed long enough. im sick of it so i wanna grow for myself, top quality, tasty , trippy as hell weed. o, im going for either LSD or white LSD….. any help would be grate! happy smoking!

  5. scott says:

damn, for a weed luvvin comunity yall guys are stressin out hard man. give a guy a break and kick back enjoy the buzz and spread the knowledge.
im new to this to. just got me a complete grow tent kit, everything i need to start growing but i know jack. to me its a adventure and a learning curve but id also like to think if i wanted help more experianced people on would help me out.
the only real question i wanted to ask is about growing mediums, i was gonna use soil/peate but have seen some say it effects taste, anyother sujestions or perferances? and if youve got nothing constructive to say then say nothing. remember there no such thing as a stupid question only stupid answers

  6. NEWBY says:

I got 2 plant from ‘original female garden bush/seed” and put it in the garage at 24hrs light for 2 weeks then 12 hrs light
after 2 weeks of 12 hrs they started to grow female parts and started looking good then suddenly I realised they are producing little balls i.e turned into a Hermie… they have produced what you call little bananas I tried pulling the balls off… yet sometimes I can see pollen dropping off when I pull some of them if they are too ripe…
I’m guessing from what I have read I should just pull the Herm plants out??? Also how should I clean the garage? water? what if there is remaining pollen…will it do harm if i try growing again?

  7. jon says:

why does everyone hate male plants? where do you think those
$10 seeds you buy come from, the internet? winter is seed growin time.

  8. Dr.Kovorkin says:

Apparently you don’t know either.Height has nothing to do with it.

  9. Jimmy says:

Hay, Just moved to barcelona from the uk. After succesfully growin Indoor back home I wona grow some outdoor on my terrace in this lovely sun.
As it will take longer to grow will i need to plant it in more soil to supply the roots with more neutrients? Should a 5 gallon container be enough?

    Cheers

  10. sensisansei says:

yo. Chill out! We are all apart of a community that should support each other.
Ive been a grower/breeder for 13 years now and i find it difficult to understand the attitude some give off to others just for asking a simple question. If people had treated me that way in the begining i never would have had the pleasure of growing True Arcata Trainwreck. Much different than what you see nearly anywhere today. Nor would i have become the grower i am.
I look to help my fellow growers with nearly anything. Including genetics(which ive collected for over a decade(which i would be much happier to give a person passionate but new to growing than a person whom has grown their whole life and talks down to people just for asking for help. How did u learn without help? Everyone needs help including the best and brightest breeders and growers. So just help them out because if i hadnt been i wouldnt have what i do and wouldnt have been able to help so many people in various ways from design, to genetics to breeding techniques.
I think this is sad, as a community we must pull together because united we are strong but divided we are nothing. Not tryn to offend anyone just trying to say what i know and feel to be true. Ive been gifted many of the best genetics from friends around the world who believed in my ideas and what if they said what a dumb question? Well for one thing i probley wouldnt have been at the last 3 cannabis cups in amsterdam nor would i have believed in my passion and skill enough to believe i can create the next generation of genetics.
To all the new growers out there push yourselves and strive for the very best you can do. Start off small dont go into more work than you can handle. A properly run 2000 watt hps flowering room is a great start in fact if u are a true newbi u may want to start with two 600watt hps to start of with less heat to control as it will be cheaper to run, easier to control and u can seal the room to create what we call a “perfect room” or have an intake and exhaust ducting. I prefer sunpulse spinners yet i would recommend magnum xxx with a digital ballast as i got a great deal on my spinners!
If anyone needs help or has any questions or comments hit me up. Im on TY, Roll it up and Mr. Nice forums under sensisansei. Peace and happy growing.
