Discretion

Do you have a secluded forest glade by a meandering creek where no one but the occasional mule deer wanders? If so, you have the luxury of growing pretty much any outdoor strain suited to your climate. But most of us are growing in a space that may see the occasional passerby, or even in a garden bed overlooked by our neighbors. In this case, it is important to consider:

Height

A tall and hardy Bangi Haze may be beautiful and tasty, but when she hits two meters and proudly displays her sticky buds to the sky, the folks next door are probably going to take notice. If you don’t have lots of space, take a look at some of our shorter strains, such as Lowryder 2, that are easier hidden amongst the tomatoes.

Bangi Haze

Smell

I know you love the skunks. Who doesn’t? And they can be great choices for the outdoor grower, if you have a private space for growing. But if you’re trying to hide a few girls in the back yard, or down below those bushes along the side of the road, you better try something that does a little less self-advertising.

Time to Bud

Before you get started, do a little research on your area. When is the last frost? The first frost? Make sure you choose seeds that will produce buds well before the frost comes, as frost can damage and even kill your plants.

Climate

How much rain do you get in an average summer? What are temperatures like during the day and at night? In addition to choosing seeds with the right time to bud formation for your region, you also need to consider temperature and water. For instance, if you have a cold, cool summer you need to look for mold resistance strains that do well in cold weather, such as AutoFrisian Dew from Dutch Passion. On the other hand, if it summers are hot and long at your place, you could try a Jack Herer strain, widely renowned as one of the best smokes out there, and a lover of warm weather.

Feminized?

Feminized seeds bring obvious benefits. If you are growing marijuana in a remote location, being able to skip the sexing visits can really reduce the number of trips you have to make to your plot. However, feminized seeds are more expensive, so if you are growing right in your backyard where it is easy to check your plants, going with regular seeds may be more cost effective.

Auto-flowering?

Auto-flowering plants will form buds after a certain amount of time, and are not dependent on changes in light to flower. If you are new to outdoor growing or uncertain about the daylight changes in your area, or if you have a short summer followed by early frosts, auto-flowering seeds may be the best choice for you. While historically autos have given lower yields and lighter THC loads, there are a lot of great new strains out there that really compete with light dependent sisters. Check them out at our Top 10 Auto-Flowering Seeds.

So you know what you’re looking for in seeds. A few other considerations before you get started:

Growing Site

In addition to picking a safe, discreet location for your plants, you need to take into account the site’s soil type, soil pH and availability of light and water. Do you have heavy clay or loose sand in your grow site? Is the morning sunlight blocked by a row of trees or a building? Will you water by hand, plant near a stream or depend on rainfall to grow your plants?

Ground or Container

There are risks when you plant directly in the soil. Poor quality soil, changes in soil pH, and poor drainage can all damage your plants or inhibit their growth. Planting in a container allows you to choose your soil, as well as giving you the freedom to move your plants in and out of sunlight if necessary.

Container Cannabis Growing

Outdoor Hazards

The great outdoors houses more threats to the health and well-being of your plants than the relative safety of an indoor growroom. Mites, slugs and other garden pests can damage your crops, as can mold and bud rot if conditions are damp. Wildlife, such as rabbits and deer, may find your plants an irresistible snack. Even pets, such as dogs and cats can damage your plants, especially when they are young. Check out our Guerrilla Growing Guide before you get started to help you provide a safe home for your new plants.

To Sum up Outdoor Seeds…

Finding your perfect seeds for outdoor growing depends on a number of elements. You need to consider where you live, where you can safely grow and how much time you can commit to growing and caring for your plants. Be realistic! If you want a high THC content, you may be tempted to go with a Skunk strain, but if you also have a small or exposed space to grow, you may need to sacrifice a little power for discretion. High CBD plants usually perform best in warm climates, but that doesn’t mean you can’t find something to suit your area.

There are more and more seeds available that perform well outdoors. We have listed some of our favorites here, which perform in a wide-variety of climates. As with any cannabis growing, before you begin make sure that you are aware of the risks of growing marijuana, and plan, plan, plan! Good preparation will ensure your greatest chance for success.

2018 Top 10 Outdoor Seeds

#1 Vision- AK-47 Seeds

Best For: Short Summers, Fast Growth, Lots of THC

Vision AK-47 Seeds

Vision’s famous AK-47 seeds are a great choice for the outdoor grower with reasonable amounts of space. The plants are not huge, but their sativa roots give them a leggy tendency. However, the AK-47 has a fast finishing time, able to complete a full cycle in as little as 50 days, under ideal conditions. This makes it a good choice for those with short summers. It takes cool weather with ease, though chilly nights will slow down its growth.

The name AK-47 comes from the speed of this marijuana- not only does it grow fast, the high hits you like a bullet. Coming on quick and hard, AK-47 is known for its bright but chilled out cerebral high. If you have enough room for her, AK-47 will give you a great product in a short time outdoors.

Be sure to check out the other AK strains: AK-48 is an Indica dominant strain that shares the AK-47’s fast cycle and high yields. It is a smaller plant which prefers warmer climates, but it does have a strong odor, so beware of the neighbors! AK-49 from Vision is now available as an auto-flowering strain, one of the most potent autos out there in fact. Like the AK-48, it is a stinky plant, and requires lots of space, but if you have a safe place to grow her, the euphoric high will knock your socks off.

#2 Sensi Seeds – Guerrilla’s Gusto

Best For: Mold/Pest Resistant, Grows like a Weed

Sensi Seeds Guerrilla’s Gusto Seeds

They say you can walk into the woods, throw some Guerrilla’s Gusto seeds from Sensi Seeds over your shoulder, walk away and come back at the end of the summer for the harvest. While a little more care is certainly a good idea for highest yields, the message is clear- this is an easy to grow, self-reliant strain designed for the guerrilla grower. Make sure she has light and access to enough water and leave her alone! This is not a feminized strain, so a sexing site visit is necessary if you want to avoid seeds in your bud.

Guerrilla’s Gusto is pest and mold resistant, and handles nearly any weather conditions gracefully. She grows quite tall when left on her own. The high is a nice mix of head buzz and lazy body stone, and the yields are high. If you want low maintenance plants to produce great weed out in the back forty with minimal site visits, Guerrilla’s Gusto is the choice for you.

#3 Vision – Northern Lights Auto-Flowering Fem

Best For: EASY to Grow, Strong Indica High

Vision Northern Lights Seeds

Vision Seeds Northern Lights Auto is a great choice for the beginner. She is one of the easiest plants to grow, needs very little in terms of fertilizer, and handles a variety of light conditions easily. This is the auto-flowering version, which goes from seed to smoke in only 8 weeks. The high is powerful, full body and deeply relaxing, making her a great choice for medical users.

We like Northern Lights Auto over the original because it is just so easy to grow. You cannot make a mistake with this plant, she will thrive in a variety of soils, in a variety of climates and with very little feeding, giving you great weed with potent Indica effects. Additionally, these plants are smaller than Northern Lights, which can get 5-6 feet tall when grown outdoors. However, the more experienced grower may want to give the original Northern Lights from Vision (see #4 below) a try, as it does give a higher yield than its auto-flowering counterpart. Keep in mind that the original needs a warm climate to thrive.

  • Type : Indica/Ruderalis
  • Height : 100-130 cm

Best For: Warm Climates, Tall Plant, Efficient

Vision Northern Lights Feminized Seeds

Another old school, mainly Indica variety, Northern Lights definitely deserves a mention in our top 10. This dense, bushy plant will usually stay under a meter in height when grown indoors, but put them outside and under the right conditions you could find yourself the proud owner of a two meter behemoth of a marijuana tree.

The yield from this plant is phenomenal, and has a more subtle, pleasant aroma than Skunk #1. The taste is delectable; spicy yet sweet. The excellent flower to leaf ratio makes for efficient growing in any situation, and when you see those sticky, dense buds practically dripping with resin, we defy your mouth not to be watering. The buzz from Northern Lights is pure Indica with a pleasant couch lock sensation and a long lasting effect.

This little plant has a very mild odor, adding to its appeal for stealth growers.

No wasted seed, and it doesn’t care how much light it gets. Lowryder 2 will set flowers on schedule, regardless of your day length. #6 GreenHouse – Jack Herer Feminized Seeds

Best For: Mediterranean Climate, Unbeatable High

Green House Jack Herer Feminized Seeds

A true classic and widely considered one of the best strains available, Jack Herer seeds are not for the beginner, but are well worth the trouble. With archetypal sativa growth, long fingered leaves and frosty buds, a Jack Herer plant is a real beauty. The plants require a warm, dry climate to grow, and lots of space. Don’t try planting Jack Herer seeds in a container, as there simply will not be enough room for her to spread out.

If you have the right climate, give Jack Herer a try. She takes a little longer than some, needing 11 weeks to really mature, but the high is unlike anything you have tried. It is cerebral, trippy and joyous, with a deep accompanying body stone. Once you try it you’ll see why it is so very worth the effort.

Due to her vast popularity, there are now many variations on the original Jack Herer available. Advanced Seeds offers a quality auto-flowering version that makes growing a little easier, although a warm, dry climate is still important. Paradise Seeds also offers an Auto Jack that promises fast growth and high yields. Barney’s Blue Cheese Auto Seeds

Blue Cheese Auto is a lovely plant to grow. Short, stocky and robust, it is perfect for limited spaces and more stealthy grows, and at flowering time the sticky, resin laden buds are a welcome payoff for all your hard work. Be careful with the situation of this plant however, as it is particularly susceptible to imbalances in pH.

The autoflowering version of this potent little plant is well worth the extra investment. The seeds are vigorous from the start, and 10 weeks after germination you can expect a harvest, no matter what the photoperiod. This makes Blue Cheese Autoflowering a great choice for those with short summers and unpredictable climates. The end result is a smaller harvest than some of the other Cheese varieties, but what you miss out on in quantity, you certainly make up in quality. Afghan Weed Seeds

Pure Afghan landrace varieties grew happily outdoors for centuries, with little to no intervention from their human neighbors. These successful and fast growing varieties have undergone expert selection in Holland to produce varieties that are ideally suited to both indoor and outdoor growing.

CONCLUSION:

Growing marijuana outdoors can be incredibly rewarding. Your biggest task when growing outdoors is preparation. In the grow room you manage your lights, temperature, pH, nutrients and hydro solutions. Outside you leave most of that up to Mother Nature. Choosing a safe, secluded spot with plenty of sunlight, water and reasonably fertile, well-draining soil is imperative to producing a successful crop.

You should also choose a seed with the proper genetics to perform well outside. Many strains, like Power Flower or Royal Cheese give their best yields and grow to their greatest heights outside. Seeds like Holland’s Hope or Bangi Haze cope well with wet, cool summers in Northern latitudes. Choosing a seed that is bred for the variable conditions of outdoor growing will help you achieve the largest, tastiest and easiest harvest possible. Do your homework, prepare a good grow site, plant your carefully selected seeds and enjoy watching the summer sun grow fat, frosty buds for you.

    I enjoyed the read

  2. Jared says:

Pineapple chuck has been a solid producer for us outdoors. Grows somewhat similar to a short-flowering diesel strain, and forms up buds thick on the insides as well. While maybe not EXACTLY like pineapple, the buds do have a nice pungent fruit smell.

  3. Set420 says:

Great info. There are so many strains now that any info is to be read. Great list, but one thing I can’t find anywhere….. Is there some sort of list, anywhere, that gives bud genetic threshold? Want something that will actually be HELPED by topping/pinching, not just produce the same amount of (smaller) buds. Any info greatly appreciated!!!

  4. Dmitry says:

I envy you guys if you can grow these strains outdoors. Where I live (lattitude 57N) we can only grow a few photoperiod strains and even them with no guarantee. I mean only the earliest phenos and if the late summer and early fall are warm and sunny etc. For example I tried such outdoor strains as Early Girl and Early Pearl by Sensi Seeds and none of them even began to flower before the early November frosts hit. If you live in a climate like mine and want to grow something besides autos here’s a list of strains for cold climates http://reviews.kanna.biz/category/cannabis-for-cold-climates Happy growing next season!
