Jack Herer Feminized Seeds

Jack Herer Marijuana Seeds – History, Feminized, Auto-Flowering and Crosses

Amongst famous strains, Jack Herer is one of the most beloved as well as one of the most notoriously difficult to grow. Named for late cannabis activist Jack Herer, author of The Emperor Wears No Clothes and subject of the film “Emperor of Hemp” this strain was one of the first strains to make hybrid seeds wildly popular. It is a credit to breeder Ben Dronkers of Sensi Seeds that this strain remains one of the best hybrid seeds available so many years after its 1994 release.

About Jack Herer

True to its Haze heritage, Jack Herer is not cannabis for the uninitiated. Newbie smokers may find themselves overwhelmed by the powerful cerebral high that whisks them away after the first puffs. The soaring, giggly and often trippy mental effects are accentuated by a buzzing body stone for a package that is pure medicine for both mind and body.

Jack Herer Bud

In the grow room this strain is well-known for being difficult, yet Sensi swears it is no tougher to handle than any Sativa dominant strain. It is true that getting the very best from Jack Herer with good yields and high quality buds requires an expert touch, but anyone with some grow experience should be able get decent results. Those with experience cloning will have the best results with Jack Herer.

If you have a long, hot growing season like that of Southern Spain, Jack Herer will grow into a veritable cannabis tree and produce stunning yields outdoors.

Despite the difficulties it presents, a Jack Herer grow should be on every Sativa lover’s bucket list. The process is joyful as you watch the four distinct Jack Herer phenotypes develop in your grow room, and the resultant richly flavored buds with their unique hit are more than reward enough for your efforts.

History of Jack Herer Cannabis

Jack Herer cannabis has simple and touching history. It was bred by Ben Dronkers of Sensi Seeds in honor of his friend and famous marijuana activist, Jack Herer. Dronkers worked carefully over several years to produce this Sativa dominant strain. While Sensi declines to release the exact parentage of the original Jack Herer, it is speculated with some certainty that it is a 55% Sativa cross of Haze, Shiva Skunk and Northern Lights #5.

Since the original Jack Herer release in 1994, many other seedbanks have grown and bred Sensi’s strain. The end result is a large collection of strains going by the name Jack Herer. Many of these such as the strains from Vision and Green House are strikingly similar to the original, while others, like those from Bull Dog and BC Bud Depot have varied more widely.

Sensi holds the vast majority of the awards for this strain, and is widely acknowledged not only as the originator of Jack Herer, but also as the seedbank with the highest quality JH seeds.

“Hemp will be the future of all mankind; or there won’t be a future.” Jack Herer

The man who inspired the exceptional Jack Herer strain was a pioneer of cannabis activism. He spent his life promoting the benefits of marijuana, not just in terms of its effects on the physical and mental health of smokers but its potential as a source of textiles, fuel and even food. Herer believed cannabis could literally save the planet.

Jack Herer the Cannabis Emperor

Jack Herer celebrated many of facets of marijuana. He knew it as a mind-expanding drug which had the power to remind people of their creativity, humanity and their relationship to the rest of life on the planet, as a medicine with the power to ease pain and heal disease, as a renewable fiber to replace trees in the production of paper and as a fuel to eliminate our reliance on oil. In its last manifestation, as a source of relief from dependence on fossil fuels, cannabis would also put an end to conflict and bloodshed related to oil in the Middle East.

Industrial growing of hemp, distinct from medicinal and recreational marijuana plants in that is very low in THC, was outlawed under the U.S. Controlled Substances Act of 1970 because of its relationship to THC laden marijuana. While the current American government’s fear of recreational drug use prompted this ban, our nation’s forefathers strongly supported the growth of hemp:

“Hemp is of first necessity to the wealth and protection of the country.” Thomas Jefferson

“Why use up the forests which were centuries in the making and the mines which required ages to lay down, if we can get the equivalent of forest and mineral products in the annual growth of the hemp fields?” Henry Ford

Fortunately the efforts of cannabis activists such as Jack Herer are beginning to see fruition. Yet while medicinal and even recreational cannabis use has begun to be legalized in several states, it remains illegal to grow hemp commercially. Each year bills come before congress to legalize the industrial growth of this valuable and versatile plant, but they have yet to be signed into law.

Industrial Hemp Field

Jack Herer argued that the reason for the industrial hemp ban and the other laws prohibiting the growing and use of marijuana are intentional acts by the United States Government in support of large-scale commercialization and as a source of power. If hemp is the wonder plant Herer believed it to be, legalizing marijuana in all its forms could be the impetus for a much larger revolution which could change the way we think, move and interact with the world around us.

Growing Jack Herer

Jack Herer is not easy in the grow room, mostly because of its massive size which is challenging to control and requires greater inputs of light and water. Unless you are an experienced grower who has handled large Sativa dominant or Haze strains before, you may choose to start off with a more manageable auto-flowering Jack Herer variety.

Jack Herer Auto-Flowering Variety

Feeding Jack Herer

Like many Sativa dominant hybrids, Jack Herer is sensitive to over-feeding. Limit her nutrients to about 80% of the recommended amount and you shouldn’t have problems. Remember to balance your nutrients for each stage of growth: during vegging you should use half as much phosphorus and potassium as nitrogen, while during flowering the plants will need extra phosphorus to produce resinous buds. Keep the potassium level at half that of nitrogen to avoid nutrient lockout.

It is important to thoroughly flush your Jack Herer plants by giving them only plain water the last week before harvest. Residual nutrients can cause your buds to develop a chemical tang during curing and reduce their potency. For more information check out our Using the Right Nutrients page here.

Dealing with Massive Cannabis Trees

Cannabis Trees Outdoor Grow

Jack Herer’s size is perhaps her most challenging quality in an indoor grow. You will do best to grow her in a room with tall ceilings and allowing her to stretch as much as she wants. If you have the right space you may actually find you can fit more Jack Herer plants than Skunk or Indica plants in the same space. These girls grow upward, stretching their many flowered fingers towards the sky, a shape which allows you to pack more in as long as you have the space for upward growth. The shorter, bushier Indica varieties require more horizontal growing space.

A few pieces of advice to handle giant Jack Herer plants:

1. Use big pots.

It is critical that the roots have room to grow. If they run into the edges of your pots too soon the growth of the plant will be stunted and your yields will suffer greatly. Some growers use pots as big as 25-35 liters and see yields of 500 g/plant as a result.

2. Check your Lights.

Make sure you have ample room to raise your lights, especially if you are using HID lights. You can easily burn your plants if you don’t keep them a respectable distance from the lights, especially as they hit the 2 meter mark during flowering. Consider growing Jack Herer under full spectrum LED Lights like the Spectrum King to avoid this problem.

Jack Herer Cannabis Clone Roots

3. Flower soon after rooting.

By limiting the time the plant spend in veg you can control their height, somewhat. They will still stretch massively during flowering, but you can limit their final height this way.

4. Take clones as soon as possible.

If you are set up to handle clones, start taking them from each plant as soon as it hits 25 cm. Put the clones straight to flower. Not only will this allow you to identify the males early on, it will also reveal the phenotype of each plant. If height is a concern, you can choose to keep the ones showing the shorter, stockier Indica phenotype rather than the leggy Sativas.

The Four Jack Herer Phenotypes

Growers should not expect to see uniformity in their Jack Herer plants. They grow in four distinct phenotypes:

Phenotype A: A strongly Sativa dominant pheno, these plants will reach record heights in the grow room, stretching up to five times once flowering begins. But they also produce what are arguably the most potent of the Jack Herer buds. Identify them by their irregular, oversized calyxes, which will cover the top half of each stem and branch by the end of flowering.

Phenotype B: The most Indica-esque of the four Jack Herer phenos, B still doubles or triples its vegetative height during flowering. Yet it is the fastest phenotype, with a more compact growth pattern and heavy, resinous buds which cluster around the nodes. They do run partway along the stem. Typically the upper branches of this pheno will combine with the main stem, forming a large central cola. While all the Jack Herer phenos have the creative, soaring cerebral high, this one has a stronger physical component than the phenos A or C.

Phenotype C: This pheno is very similar to A, and many growers may not be able to distinguish the two, though Sensi lists them separately. These plants are strongly Sativa dominant, growing tall and slender with productive branches. The calyxes are not as long as those of A, but they grow outwards in a stringy fashion that gives the buds a spiky appearance. This trait means they generally produce the largest buds of the four phenotypes, though not necessarily the highest yields. The flavor is delicious- creamy, sweet and a little spicy. The high has a little extra energy to it.

Phenotype D: These plants produce dense, Indica like buds at each node but gain massive height during flowering. Since the calyxes don’t run up the stems like in phenos A and C this creates gaps in between nodes. This pheno makes up for it by producing ridiculous amounts of resin, and it offers a stronger physical body stone than the other phenos. There is considerably less branching in these plants as well, allowing them to be grown closer together. They also finish flowering quickly, making them easier to grow and manage.

Use the Right Lights for Jack Herer

Odds are you don’t have the long, hot summers necessary to grow Jack Herer outdoors, so you will need to choose the proper lights for your indoor grow. The two best options for Jack Herer are full spectrum LEDs or HID lights. There are pros and cons to both choices:

1. Full Spectrum LED Grow Lights

Pros:

Full spectrum models provide all the wavelengths of light for vegging and flowering Lights don’t waste energy on heat, they produce light!
Less risk of burning plants
Save up to 50% on electricity costs

Cons:

Can be more expensive to purchase and install.

2. HID Lights

Pros:

Less expensive to purchase and install
Produce great yields and healthy plants

Cons:

2 different lights required for vegging and flowering
Require reflectors.
Produce a lot of heat, requiring fans and good ventilation.

Spectrum King Super LED Grow Light

We advise not to use HID lights with your Jack Herer plants unless you have a very tall space and are able to keep the lights well above the tops of the plants, even after they reach 6-7 feet in height. Jack Herer stretches quickly during flower. You may find yourself adjusting your lights every couple of days to keep the distance right. While HID lights are less expensive to initially purchase, they cost more in electricity over time than full spectrum LED lights. If you choose them, manage your grow carefully! Many experienced cultivators have burned their Jack Herer plants just when they were about to reap the harvest of months of hard work.

Full spectrum LEDs are the safest choice for a Jack Herer indoor grow, especially if you are a less experienced grower. These efficient lights can save you up to 50% on your electric bill, reduce the need for ventilation and don’t require reflectors. Choosing full spectrum LED lights will simplify one aspect of an already complicated grow.

Training Jack Herer

Low Stress Training Cannabis

You may choose to apply some training techniques to your Jack Herer plants to try to control their growth or to increase yields.

Jack Herer will often defy all your attempts to limit her growth, but there are a couple of techniques she responds well to:

  • Topping– Lightly clipping the tops of your plants can make single kola into 2 or even 4.
  • Fimming– By taking Topping a step further, Fimming quickly multiplies your flowering heads from 1 to 4 at each site.
  • Low Stress Training (LST)– In this technique you are basically tying the branches of the plant down. This works well to limit the height of Jack Herer plants, though you will need to do it several times and they will take up more horizontal growing space.
  • Super Cropping– Without doing any actual trimming you can still stress your plants to increase their strength, growth and yields. This is the most effective way to boost yields in most Jack Herer plants.

If you have Jack Herer in your grow room you have chosen a marijuana monster that will reward you with some of the tastiest buds and most mind-blowing highs you have ever experienced. Respect her size in the grow room and give her the space she wants, and you may find yourself converted. Once they learn how to handle Jack Herer, many growers never go back to other strains again.

Growing Jack Herer Outdoors

Support for Jack Herer Marijuana

If you have a warm, dry climate with a long growing season Jack Herer can be grown outdoors. She needs 2-3 months of warm, long days to veg to her full potential, plus at least 10 weeks of heat to finish flowering. Don’t try to hide these plants. They will become trees outdoors, easily topping 2 meters and defying any attempts to conceal them. If you plant several be sure to give them ample room for their roots to grow. They should not be spaced closer than 1.5 meters apart. If your climate cooperates you could see some truly amazing yields from Jack Herer outdoors.

Awards

Jack Herer is one of the most highly awarded strains on the market. In the world of cannabis competition it grows on a pedestal alongside the famous White Widow, Northern Lights and Super Silver Haze.

Sensi Seeds can claim nearly all of the original Jack Herer cannabis competition prizes. While other seedbanks have bred and made slight alterations to Jack Herer, the awards don’t lie: Sensi’s original strain is a power-house of near perfection that needs no alterations.

#1 Sensi – Jack Herer Seeds

Best For: Crystal Clear High

Sensi Jack Herer Seeds

Jack Herer from Sensi is one of the most popular strains of all time. It is the clear, clean cerebral high coupled with a peaceful humming body stone that made this strain a favorite of the man Jack Herer, as well as an easy choice for smokers and judges alike.

The original from Sensi grows in four distinct phenotypes, the development of which is a joy to observe in the grow room. The first three have strong Sativa characteristics. Think carefully before starting your seeds, as some of these girls have been known to reach over 10 feet in height. The fourth phenotype has an Indica growth pattern. She stays short, squat and flowers quickly compared to her leggy sisters. All four phenotypes deliver the same quality high that made this strain so well loved.

#2 Vision – Jack Herer Seeds

Best For: True to the Original Jack Herer

Vision Jack Herer Seeds

Similarities to Sensi’s Original JH:

In the case of Jack Herer Vision made very few alterations to the original. This is a potent Sativa strain with the clear, creative high and grow room sensitivities of Sensi’s strain..

Differences:

The JH from Vision tends to stay a little smaller than that from Sensi, and her THC levels can be slightly higher.

Tips for the Grow Room:

Vision’s Jack Herer is touchy in the grow room. While she requires a lot of nutrients she doesn’t tolerate either over or under fertilization, so watch her carefully for signs of improper feeding. She needs room to stretch during flowering. Consider either SOG or Super Cropping, both of which she responds to well. She will need support during flowering. This is a strain that should not be attempted by an amateur grower, though experts will get great joy and a potent product in reward for their attentive care in the grow room.

Comments:

Vision is a good choice if you are looking for decent Jack Herer seeds at a lower price than Sensi. The plants are not as consistently mind-blowing as the original’s, but they are about as close as possible.

  • Type Sativa 80%, Indica 20%
  • Height 2 meters
  • Flowering time 8-9 weeks

#3 Green House – Jack Herer Feminized Seeds

Best For: Fast Flowering, True JH High

Green House Jack Herer Feminized Seeds

Similarities to Sensi’s Original JH:

Strong mental and physical effects. This strain offers the fast-hitting, long-lasting and complex high that makes it worthy of the Jack Herer name.

Differences:

This JH strain has a little stronger Indica influence than the original. It finishes flowering in only 8 weeks, and stays to a more moderate size.

Tips for the Grow Room:

Try SOG or SCOG to boost the already ample yields and control the size of these plants. This strain does well outdoors, and does not require as warm a climate as some JH strains. Grown in fertile soil yields outside can reach 1200g/plant.

Comments:

Green House’s Jack Herer is a cross of Haze and Red Skunk.

#4 White Label – Jack Herer Seeds

Best For: F2 of Original Jack Herer

White Label Jack Herer Seeds

Similarities to Sensi’s Original JH:

Mostly Sativa dominant phenotypes, these are tall, large plants with high yields. The high is powerfully cerebral, often nearing psychedelic.

Differences:

As Sensi explains, if their Jack Herer is the Champagne of strains this is the “Me´thode Champagnoise of top-class cannabis hybrids.” It is not quite the stunning smoke as the original, but it is superior to many copy strains.

Tips for the Grow Room:

White Label Jack Herer has the potential to get huge. There are a variety of phenotypes that will appear. Keep your eye out for a plant with high yields, strong Sativa characteristics and a more maneagable size. This is the one to save for your mother plant and make future clones from.

Comments:

White Label is a branch of Sensi Seeds. This Jack Herer is an F2 variation of Sensi’s original F1 Jack Herer strain. The parent plants were chosen to maximize the award-winning Jack Herer traits.

  • Type Sativa 50%, Indica 50%
  • Height 5-1.8 meters
  • Flowering time 8-10 weeks
  • Awards won none
  • Yield 100 g/plant

Homegrown Fantaseeds Jack Herer Feminized Seeds

Similarities to Sensi’s Original JH:

Bright, crisp and energetic mental high. Sativa dominant effects with some subtle and mellow body buzzing.

Differences:

This strain is more tolerant of errors and is more beginner friendly than the original Jack Herer.

Tips for the Grow Room:

While this strain is a little kinder to grow errors, you should still do your best to carefully monitor nutrients and look for signs of nutrient burn or deficiency.

Comments:

Homegrown Fantaseeds has growing reputation as a quality breeder who produces stable seeds with good germination rates. While they can’t quite match the stunning effects of the original Jack Herer, they did manage to create an easier-to-grow version that still packs a solid Sativa punch.

  • Type Sativa Dominant

  • Awards won None
  • Yield Moderate
  • Feminized Yes
  • Autoflowering No

#6 Seedsman – Jack Herer Feminized Seeds

Best For: Fast Flowering, True JH High

Seedsman Jack Herer Feminized Seeds

Similarities to Sensi’s Original JH:

Giggly, trippy high that relieves depression, anxiety and headaches. Pleasant body tingle to balance out the mental effects.

Differences:

This strain flowers a little faster than the original and shows a bit more Indica influence in the smoke, though not in the grow room.

Tips for the Grow Room:

Don’t grow this strain unless you have ample room for upward growth. Expect your flowering plants to shoot to an easy 6 feet in height. Training techniques like topping and super cropping can help to manage size, but don’t expect to make her a medium sized plant. No matter what you do, this strain will need her space.

Comments:

While often listed and sold under the Seedsman name, this is the Green House Jack Herer, a hybrid cross of Haze and Red Skunk.

  • Type Sativa 60%, Indica 40%
  • Height Medium
  • Flowering time 8 weeks

Best For: Easier Grow, Intense High and Flavor

Sannie’s Jack Feminized Seeds

Similarities to Sensi’s Original JH:

The same brain and body tingling high as the original. Upbeat and energetic.

Differences:

This strain is a little easier to grow, and responds to SOG and SCOG much better than the Sensi strain. The flavor has a more intense citrus note.

Tips for the Grow Room:

Training techniques work well on Sannie’s Jack. While it is a leggy Haze style Sativa, it still responds well in SOG and SCOG set-ups.

Comments:

Many will argue that this is the highest quality and most affordable Jack Herer strain currently on the market. Is it really better than the Sensi strain? Is that even possible? Let us know you experience in the comments below. Devendra please link to the comments section.

Bull Dog Jack Herer Feminized Seeds

Similarities to Sensi’s Original JH:

Differences:

With so much extra Indica, we would expect to see some distinct differences in the grow room. The buds are heavy and resinous with good yield, and flowering finishes in a manageable 8 weeks.

Tips for the Grow Room:

The branching structure of this strain makes it favorable for a SOG or SCOG grow.

Comments:

Bull Dog has spent several years breeding and refining Jack Herer. They have added a significant amount of Indica genetics, making this the only Indica dominant Jack Herer strain available.

  • Type Sativa 30%, Indica 70%

Differences:

This strain finishes flowering a little faster than the original, but is otherwise very similar.

Tips for the Grow Room:

The heavy buds of Jock Horror will require support at the end of flowering.

Comments:

Jock Horror is Nirvana’s own mix of Haze, Skunk and Northern Lights. They did not work from the Sensi original, but rather sought to create their own version. The similarities between this strain and Sensi’s Jack Herer are striking.

#1 Zambeza – Jack Herer Auto-Flowering Feminized Seeds

Best For: Easy, Great for Stealth Grow

Zambeza Jack Herer Auto-Flowering Feminized Seeds

Jack Herer Auto from Zambeza makes growing this famous strain a breeze, but you have to have patience. It can take up to 12 weeks to finish flowering, but remember flowering starts just days after germination in auto-flowering strains.

Despite the lengthy flower period, this is an Indica heavy Jack Herer strain. The plants stay to a short 40-90 cm in height, making them a good option for a grow box or cabinet. The buds are extremely resinous and look like they are coated with a dusting of morning frost. The plants grow strongly indoors and out, though you need to have a long enough summer to allow them to fully flower.

The Indica influence shows up in the effects of this strain as well. It hits hard and fast, with a strong body buzz that melts pain and eases sore muscles. Don’t worry; it still has the characteristic soaring head high you expect from a Jack Herer bud.

#1 Exotic – Sir Jack Auto Feminized Seeds

Best For: Quality High, Lemon Scent

Exotic Sir Jack Auto-Flowering Feminized Seeds

Exotic’s Auto Sir Jack is a cross between Sir Jack and Skunk Auto, and is an F6 strain. While it is not a direct offspring of Jack Herer, all of its characteristics are reminiscent of that famous grandparent.

The high is a powerful cerebral experience that will leave you floating in peaceful, creative bliss for hours. This is great weed for mellow social situations, but is too powerful to be a good daytime smoke if you have work to do.

In the grow room she is big and slow for an auto-variety. Give her a full 12 weeks to finish, and make sure she has enough space as she does best without training. She is tougher than her Jack Herer ancestor, and can take more errors in feeding and watering.

The end result is worth the wait. Expect a high yield of resinous buds that have the sour lemon and incense odor of Jack Herer.

#4 Sweet – Big Devil XL Automatic Feminized Seeds

Best For: Vigorous Growth, Speed

Sweet Big Devil XL Automatic Feminized Seeds

This Sweet Seeds strain is a cross of Jack Herer and Big Devil #2 Auto. For an auto-flowering variety she is massive! You can almost see her growing by the minute, as she shoots up and branches into a small cannabis tree in a short nine weeks.

The buds are heavy, dense and there are lots of them. They are also powerfully smelly, so don’t pick this strain if you are doing a stealth grow. The odor is pleasant, a nice blend of sandalwood and citrus, but it will stick to your clothes, your furniture and everything that enters your grow room.

Sweet Seeds bred this strain for yield, speed and vigorous growth, and they succeeded on all three. The high is not as euphoric or joyous as some of the other Jack Herer blends, but it is a nice relaxing hit that eases muscle tension and can help you unwind after a long day.

What’s Next for Jack Herer

The original Jack Herer remains in high demand, and probably always will. Competing seedbanks continue to attempt to improve upon the strain, typically by adding Indica genetics in an attempt to make it a little smaller and a little faster during flowering. We will continue to see crosses of Jack Herer as well as new strains released with similar parentage. After all, Haze, Skunk and Northern Lights are classic strains for a reason. Their genes are strong and stable, and they are truly the foundation strains of hybrid cannabis breeding.

Conclusion

Don’t be too intimidated by the famous Jack Herer. Yes, the effects are powerful, but the high is such a bright, positive experience that you won’t be able to help yourself. You’ll be back for more.

In the grow room the biggest challenge is Jack Herer’s size. The plants are more tolerant of feeding and lighting errors than you may think. If you can find the space for these big beauties, or feel confident in your cloning and training skills, give Jack Herer a try. More than anything, this strain demands your attention. Be patient and observant, and don’t burn them with your lights, and you should be rewarded with a high yield of resinous buds that will blow your mind.

im going to try to grow Jack indoors and need to know just how tall they will get?? If anyone has the data on this it would be much appreciated as I have room for about one meter (three feet) any higher will require structural changes. I can do it but need to know ahead of time. I’m going to be going from seed, not clones.

As the salve is so hard to get hear in Tucson, Arizona, I would like to grow my own plants indoors and do not know how to get started and what seed to buy in order to make the salve. I need something strong, possibly with a THC count of 20% or higher. Can you help. Thanks and regards Steve Grier
