About Blue Cheese

Blue Cheese has all the attractive characteristics of its parents, Blueberry and Cheese. It is perhaps most famous for its pungent flavor that is softened by fruity berry sweetness. The unique scent and taste of this strain may be what initially grabs your attention, but it is the peaceful, relaxing hybrid high that will keep you coming back for another taste.

The effects of Blue Cheese are pure pleasure. You will find your body utterly relaxed, and your mind open and bright. There is some energy to the high that keeps it functional and comforting at the same time. Variations of Blue Cheese are offered by different seedbanks. Each breeder leaves their own mark, and you will find that some Blue Cheese buds have heavier Indica body effects than others.

Blue Cheese Kola from Barney’s Marijuana

Thanks to some quality Indica genes on both sides of her parentage, Blue Cheese is friendly in the grow room. While yields are not as high as in some commercial strains, with proper handling they produce more than enough to satisfy anyone growing for home use.

If you love a balanced high and stinky bud, Blue Cheese is a must-try strain for you.

History of Blue Cheese Cannabis

Blue Cheese comes from a cross of multiple Cannabis Cup winning Blueberry and Big Buddha’s famous Cheese. The story goes that the breeders at Big Buddha crossed several Blueberry males with their Cheese female, ending up with a selection of 40 Blueberry X Cheese plants. They chose their favorite male and bred it back to the Cheese female, producing a stable, Indica dominant strain with a truly distinctive flavor.

To fully appreciate the subtleties of Blue Cheese, let’s take a look at her parents:

Blueberry Seeds

Dutch Passion Blueberry Seeds

About Blueberry Cannabis Seeds

Blueberry is the origin of most of the fruit flavored strains on the market today. It is an Indica dominant strain with a hard-hitting high and a bright berry flavor. Used medicinally to relieve insomnia and pain, Blueberry is not all Indica stone. The high has a euphoric Sativa edge that makes this strain an award winning hybrid.

History of Blueberry Seeds

This is an old strain. It came from one of DJ Short’s California breeding experiments during the 70’s. Using Juicy Fruit, a Thai Sativa, and Afghani landrace genetics, Short bred Blueberry cannabis. Through Short’s many connections in the cannabis world, seeds were distributed to various seedbanks, including Sagarmatha and Dutch Passion. Dutch Passion has received most of the credit for Blueberry when it comes to awards.

Blueberry genetics are the origins of almost all the fruit flavors and smells seen in strains today. In fact, the term Blue Cannabis was coined to describe any cannabis strain that includes Blueberry in its genetic lineage. The Blue Cannabis family includes strains typically bred to include three important Blueberry traits:

  1. Potency: the original Blueberry has THC levels of 19-20%, making this some hard hitting cannabis. While modern strains reach higher and higher levels of THC, when Blueberry hit the scene in the late 70’s it was amongst the most potent strains available.
  2. Aroma: It isn’t Blue if it isn’t fruity. Nearly all the strains with Blueberry genes have a fruity, berry or sweet flavor that makes them a pleasure to smoke and fun to have in your grow room.
  3. Color: As you may guess, Blue Cannabis strains often have at least one phenotype with Blueberry’s classic purple coloration.

Colorful Blueberry Cannabis Flower

There are many members of the Blue Cannabis family, including Kushberry, Blue Haze, Crimea Blue, Blue Mystic, Blue Mammoth and Blueberry Crumble.

Growing Blueberry Seeds

Most Blueberry plants have a decidedly Indica shape, though occasionally you will see a Sativa phenotype that tends to stretch during flowering. The leaves are typically wide with broad, leathery fingers. It is best to start several Blueberry seeds so you can pick out the phenotypes with the biggest yield and best flavor to save for your mother stock.

Growing indoors Blueberry performs well under SOG set-ups, which can boost her slightly lower than average yields.

Color and cold seem to go together with cannabis buds. Exposing your plants to cooler temperatures late in flowering will enhance their rich purple coloring and make the berry flavor really pop. This strain has a greater tolerance for cool nights than many strains, making her a good choice for outdoor growers in temperate climates.

Another endearing Blueberry trait is that her buds last an exceptionally long time when properly cured. If you are growing for personal use consider this strain. As long as you keep the buds away from oxygen you will be able to enjoy the heavy, euphoric high and summer berry taste of Blueberry all year round.

More Blueberry

You can purchase original Blueberry from DJ Short Seeds or Dutch Passion. Both have been reported to occasionally turn hermaphrodite, but it is well worth the work when you get a true, flavorful and potent Blueberry.

Since the original is not the most stable strain out there, we’ve picked out a few of our favorite Blueberry crosses which are a little more reliable in the grow room.

Here are a few you may want to try:

1. Dutch Passion – AutoBlueberry Feminized Seeds

Best For: Rich Flavor, Blissful Stone

Dutch Passion AutoBlueberry Feminized Seeds

This delicious auto version of Blueberry is one of Dutch Passion’s best-selling seeds. This is no surprise, considering the incredible combination of flavor and quality in this easy to grow, fast finishing strain.

Like most auto-flowering varieties, AutoBlueberry stays small, making her a good choice for the stealth grower. She will fit easily into a small grow cabinet and no one need know you have her.

Dutch Passion backcrossed Blueberry with an Afghan Indica when breeding this strain. This addition gives AutoBlueberry a rich, musky flavor with just a hint of blue fruit at the end. Plus she makes fabulous hash.

The high is intense if you are a novice smoker. Experienced tokers will enjoy the uplifting, blissful stone that settles into your body but doesn’t leave you stuck to the couch.

  • Type Indica 60%, Sativa 20%, Ruderalis 20%
  • Height Small
  • Finishing time 10 weeks from germination
  • Awards won None
  • Yield 200 g/m2
  • Feminized Yes

2. Humboldt Seed Organization – Blue Dream Seeds

Best For: The Perfect High

Humboldt Seed Organization Blue Dream

Blue Dream is one of our favorite Blueberry crosses. Humboldt Seed Organization crossed the sweet and blissful Blueberry with the superstar Super Silver Haze. Blue Dream was originally bred back in the ‘70’s, and she remains one of the top 10 strains sold in California. That’s some serious staying power.

Fans swear that Blue Dream has the perfect hybrid hit. The high is calm, peaceful and uplifting which leaves you feeling light and open to anything.

Growing Blue Dream can pose a challenge to beginners due to her Sativa roots. You will need to prune or train these plants to keep them from taking over your space. Try LST or Super Cropping, which will not only limit her size but boost yields.

  • Type Sativa 80%, Indica 20%
  • Height Tall and Wide
  • Flowering time 65-70 Days

2. Dinafem – Blue Widow Feminized Seeds

Best For: Balanced, Relaxing High, Big Yield

Blue Widow Feminized Seeds

Dinafem crossed two of the cannabis world’s most famous strains, Blueberry and White Widow, to make the tasty and potent Blue Widow.

The plants can get huge, topping 10 feet when grown outdoors in a mild climate. The Widow influence creates ample lateral branching which boosts yields and can be manipulated with various training techniques. The buds are fat and thick, which makes them prone to mold towards the end of flowering. It is important to give them ample air circulation at this stage, so consider lollipopping your plants to keep them dry.

The flavor has a hint of fruitiness that blends with the Widow flavors to create a unique bubblegum taste. When smoked Blue Widow gives a lovely balanced hybrid high that is relaxing without creating couch-lock.

  • Type Hybrid
  • Height Tall
  • Flowering time 8-9 weeks
  • Awards won None

Cheese Seeds

Big Buddha Original Cheese

About Cheese

Cheese is typically lauded for its dank smell and the funky flavor for which it was named. Yet it offers so much more! This is an easy growing strain that offers a powerful uplifting high, despite its Indica dominant appearance and shape. When smoked it opens your mind and brightens your world, making a great medicinal option for treating depression, anxiety and stress related disorders. There is a nice body stone as well, making this a balanced hybrid strain. With THC levels hitting nearly 22%, it cannot be called functional weed, but does make for a cheerful daytime smoke, as long as you don’t have any serious work to do.

History of Cheese

Cheese is one of many cannabis strains with an unclear history. The rumor is that it originated as a particularly funky smelling Skunk phenotype in the late 80’s. For many years the plant was propagated purely through clones. Despite the lack of seeds, Cheese spread quickly throughout Europe via an English alternative living community called Exodus. Finally, in ’95 someone (most agree it was breeders at Big Buddha, but that is uncertain) crossed a Cheese clone with a male Afghan to stabilize the strain and produce seeds. Today nearly every seedbank around offers a version of this notoriously stinky weed.

Growing Cheese Seeds

Cheese can present a variety of phenotypes during growth, though all produce buds with the characteristic cheesy flavor and euphoric high. Indoors Cheese does best if you let her multiple branches produce. She can be forced into a SOG set-up, but yields may suffer. Her long side branches produce colas which stretch beautifully during flowering to produce long, slender buds. If you use a hydroponic medium you can expect maturity and solid, resinous buds after 7-9 weeks of flowering. If you choose to grow in soil flowering will likely take a week or two longer.

Outdoor grows of Cheese can be very successful if you have the right climate. Growers in Mediterranean climates will see the highest yields. If you try her outdoors in more temperate climates expect lower yields and keep her protected against early frosts.

Whether you are growing indoors or out, this is not a strain for a stealth grow. Cheese, like all of her offspring, begins emitting her pungent, skunky odor early on. In addition to being hard to hide from neighbors, the Cheese scent will stick determinedly to your clothes and hair, making it hard to keep these girls a secret.

Best Cheese Feminized Seeds

Big Buddha deserves the credit for this stinky strain, but other seedbanks now offer their own versions of Cheese. Here are a few you may want to check out:

1. Royal Queen – Royal Cheese Feminized Seeds

Best For: Seriously Potent High

Royal Cheese Feminized Seeds

Royal Queen’s feminized version of the original Cheese is potent weed. Prepare yourself for a debilitating hit as you wait for your sparkling buds to ripen.

Royal Cheese is a friendly strain in the grow room. Indoors she stays under 4 feet in height and responds well to LST, topping and Super Cropping. Outdoors with enough sunlight she can stretch over 6 feet in height and offer bigger yields.

What Royal Cheese lacks in yield she more than makes up for in quality. The hit is powerful, stinky and comes on fast. It is a relaxing blend of physical and mental effects that will leave you unable to function.

Remember that this is stinky cheese weed. Like the other Cheese strains, don’t grow Royal Cheese if stealth is important. You won’t be able to hide her from nosy neighbors.

2. L.A. – Cheese Feminized Seeds

Best For: Medicinal Stone, Dense Buds

L.A. Cheese Feminized Seeds

DNA Genetics gives us their favorite (and famous) L.A. Confidential crossed with our stinky cheese. This surprisingly fabulous cross took home 3rd place at the 2010 High Times Cannabis Cup.

L.A. Cheese grows in two distinct phenotypes. It can be tall and lanky like the more common of Cheese phenotypes, or stay short and squat in a distinct Indica growth pattern. Both form dense buds with creamy crystals. You will get the best yields if you train for a bushy growth pattern and let clones vegetate for at least 3 weeks before setting them to flower.

While L.A. Cheese has the powerful skunk aroma of her Cheese parent, the smoke is pleasantly sweet and smooth. The hit is a powerful pain reliever. This bud will make you lazy as it sweeps you in rolling waves of physical stone.

  • Type Indica 70%, Sativa 30%

3. Dready – Cheese Feminized Seeds

Best For: Stinky, Couch Lock + Psychedelic

Dready Cheese Feminized Seeds

Cheese from Dready Seeds is a flavorful blend of Exodus Cheese and Skunk #1. Growers can choose either feminized photoperiod or auto-flowering seeds.

Dready Cheese grows best in SCOG set-ups. Get creative! Using a vertical or curving screen can maximize your grow space. Keep in mind that Dready Cheese has thin branches, so she will likely need support late in flowering. Like most Cheeses, this is not a variety for the stealth grower.

When smoking you can expect all the funky sour flavor of Cheese from these buds. If you just take a few puffs Dready Cheese has an energizing, uplifting effect. Smoke a bit more and you will experience a trippy mental ride coupled with a heavy stone that will leave you locked to the couch.

  • Type Sativa Dominant

4. Dinafem – Critical Cheese Feminized Seeds

Best For: Sativa High with Cheesy Flavor

Dinafem Critical Cheese Feminized Seeds

Dinafem put a Sativa twist on a stinky bud with Critical Cheese. This cross of Critical+ and Cheese is an easy growing Indica package with a euphoric Sativa high.

The only issue you’ll have in the grow room is trying to contain her odor! This is some seriously smelly weed all through the grow cycle. Her Sativa heritage shows up during flowering: she likes to stretch. Try a training technique like topping or LST to manage her growth. Outdoors her yields can get massive, topping 1000g/plant. She won’t grow in wet weather though, so don’t attempt an outdoor grow unless you have a warm, dry summer.

  • Type Indica 35%, Sativa 65%
  • Height Medium
  • Flowering time 8-9 weeks
  • Awards won None

Growing Blue Cheese Cannabis

Blue Cheese is pretty straightforward in the grow room, thanks to her Indica heritage. There are several phenotypes that can show up, so pay close attention to your plants. If you get one that looks like it wants to be a Sativa, taller in height with thinner leaves than your other Blue Cheese plants, be prepared to give it an extra week or two of flowering with lights at 12/12 to maximize yield and potency.

Feeding Blue Cheese

Don’t overdo the nitrogen with Blue Cheese. Like many hybrid strains she is prone to problems related to over feeding. Cut it down a notch your normal feeding program, but make sure you adjust your phosphorus and potassium levels to keep the ratios correct throughout each stage of the grow:

  • Germination: Your plants don’t need any added nutrients during germination, as the seed contains all the stored energy necessary to get started.
  • Seedling: Keep to a ratio of 2-1-2 Nitrogen: Phosphorus: Potassium (NPK).
  • Vegging: Early on in vegging, say week 3-4 after germination you want an NPK ratio of 4-2-3. The extra nitrogen helps with growth. Remember with Blue Cheese to keep all nutrient levels a bit lower than normal during vegging.
  • Flowering: During flowering you can go back to your normal nutrient routine, boosting the food available for your Blue Cheese plants. The best ratios during flowering are 5-10-7 early on, 6-15-10 during weeks 3-5 of flowering with 4-10-7 to finish off.

Whatever you do, don’t overfeed Blue Cheese, and keep the potassium levels at ½ to 2/3 the level of the lead nutrient to avoid nutrient lockout or other problems.

Blue Cheese also benefits from ample trace nutrients early on during vegging. This boost gives her extra flavor, smell and potency. For information on a variety of nutrients including trace nutrients check out our nutrient selection page here.

For more information on proper feeding for your plants check out our Using the Right Nutrients page here.

Use the Right Lights for Blue Cheese

Most growers will choose to work with their Blue Cheese plants indoors, as they can be sensitive to fluctuations in outdoor temperatures. Using the right grow lights can boost your yields and simplify growing this already beginner-friendly strain. Most people will choose either Full Spectrum LEDs or HID grow lights for Blue Cheese. It is possible, of course, to do this indoor grow using CFL lights, but the greater power and efficiency of LEDs make them a far superior choice all-around.

1. Full Spectrum LED Grow Lights

Pros: · Provides all the wavelengths of light for vegging and flowering · Lights don’t waste energy on heat · No risk of burning plants · Save up to 50% on electricity costs
Cons: · Expensive to purchase and install · In large spaces precise current management is important

2. HID Lights

Pros: · Less expensive to purchase and install · Produce great yields and healthy plants
Cons: · 2 different lights required for vegging and flowering · Require reflectors · Produce a lot of heat, requiring fans and good ventilation

Spectrum King Super LED Grow Light

Because most Blue Cheese plants take on the short, compact and stocky shape of their Indica dominant heritage, HID lights are often a good option. With leggy Sativa strains you have to constantly adjust the lights to avoid burning your plants, but with Blue Cheese these adjustments will be minimal.

Unless you have powerful lights, don’t leave Blue Cheese in the vegetative stage too long. 2-3 weeks is usually plenty of time. You will keep the plants to a manageable size, speed your harvest and get the same yield with less stretching. If you have extra Watts per square meter you may consider a longer veg period. The vigorous growth that is possible under strong lighting can significantly increase your yields on all Blue Cheese varieties.

If you choose an especially short auto-flowering strain like Auto Cheese Berry from 00 Seeds or Auto Blue Cheese from Barney’s Farm you will find yourself able to simplify your lighting needs considerably. With the small size and lack of dependency on photoperiod, it is easy to grow these varieties in several stages in the same grow room. You could have clones, seedlings, flowering plants and plants that are re-vegging after harvest all under the same HID or LED grow lights.

Training Blue Cheese

Sea of Green Growing Cannabis

You may choose to apply some training techniques to your Blue Cheese plants to boost yields.

Check with your seedbank before training this strain, as different varieties of Blue Cheese respond well to different techniques. For instance, Big Buddha’s Blue Cheese grows one large central cola making her a good option for SOG or SCOG growing, while Barney’s Farm Blue Cheese has productive lateral branching and produces greater yields if allowed to develop these side buds fully.

Auto Berry Cheese and other bushy Blue Cheese variants benefit from LST to open up the center of the plant to receive ample light. The most important thing you can do is pay careful attention to your individual plants. Blue Cheese has a variety of possible phenotypes. If you end up with a large central cola consider taking clones and doing your next grow under a SOG set-up. If you have a lot of branching let them develop and see what you get. You may even see a rare Sativa pheno that requires stronger training techniques to keep it under control.

  • Low Stress Training (LST)– In this technique you are basically tying the branches of the plant down. This is a good strategy for bushy plants as it lets light reach the inner leaves and flower sites.
  • Super Cropping– Without doing any actual trimming you can still stress your plants to increase their strength, growth and yields. This is an effective way to boost yields in many strains.
  • Sea of Green – This technique is most useful when you have numerous clones of a strongly Indica phenotype You force the flowering when they are young and fit many plants into a small space. Be sure to use ample lighting and choose your specimens carefully.
  • Screen of Green – This is another Dutch technique similar to SOG that uses a screen to support and separate buds. Again, this works best on plants with a single central cola. As in the SOG yield per plant is lowered, but yield per square meter is increased, so this is a good technique to try when you have lots of clones to work with.

Growing Blue Cheese Outdoors

Blue Cheese Cannabis Full Flower

If you have long, warm summers you can grow any Blue Cheese seeds outdoors. If you live in a cooler, more temperate climate you will have better luck with a Blue Cheese cross like Auto Purple Cheese.

Odor Control with Blue Cheese

Indoors or out, controlling the pungent odor of Blue Cheese will be your biggest challenge. Don’t be tempted by this strain if stealth is critical. Not only does to the powerful smell seep out of your grow room, it will coat your clothing, hair and skin. There are some measures you can take to contain the smell of Blue Cheese.

Carbon Filter for Cannabis Grow Tent

If you are growing indoors:

  • Use a carbon filter, and change it regularly: High quality carbon filters are the best way to contain the rich smell of your plants. They can be expensive, but they can also save your whole grow from detection, and are thus well worth the cost.
  • Add a low cost odor neutralizer: Blue Cheese is so stinky, it can’t hurt to double up. In addition to your carbon filter, place some cheap odor neutralizers like Ona Gel in your grow room to soak up some of the smell.
  • Plan your ventilation system carefully: It is critical to have continuous air flow for the health of your plants. Just be careful when planning the location of your system’s output- you don’t want to blow fragrant grow room air right at the neighbor’s porch.
  • Change your clothes: And wash your hair before you go out of the house. You nose is a sneaky thing- you will quickly become accustomed to the smell of your plants and may not notice the pervasive odor you trail with you out of the grow room. Get in the habit of showering and changing your clothes after every visit to your stinky Blue Cheese plants.

If you are growing outside the most important consideration is the grow site. It must be either in a place where it is legal to grow or in a space that is far from any human activity. This is not a good option for a guerrilla grow. We only recommend growing this strain outdoors in states where growing is legal and then only if you have exceptionally cool neighbors.

The Best Blue Cheese Seeds

Variations on Blue Cheese are offered by many seedbanks, though most acknowledge that Big Buddha originally bred the strain.

1. Big Buddha – Blue Cheese Feminized Seeds

Best For: Euphoric, Relaxing High, Flavor

Big Buddha Blue Cheese Feminized Seeds

Blue Cheese from Big Buddha gleans the majority of her genetic heritage from Big Buddha Cheese, with just enough Blueberry influence to lend a fruity edge to her odor and a euphoric bounce to her high.

This Blue Cheese variety grows as a compact bush with one giant central kola. It can be left to its own devices or grown in a SOG set-up. Inside the grow room she is straightforward grow. For successful growing outdoors you need the appropriate climate with 3 full months of warm nights for complete vegging and flowering.

The smoke is the same cheesy funk with a sweet fruity endnote that you would expect from a good Blue Cheese bud. There is a euphoric note to the high that distinguishes this strain from other Cheeses. It is uplifting and bright while still settling a deep sense of relaxation throughout your body.

This strain from Barney’s Farm is easily managed in the grow room. The plants stay short with lots of lateral branching that makes them less than ideal for SOG or SCOG set-ups. She is sensitive to variations in her pH levels but with quality nutrients and a watchful eye you can expect high yields of deliciously skunky bud.

The plants rarely top 70-100 cm, making them a good choice for small growing spaces. Don’t be tempted to try her on a stealth grow however, despite her small size her fruity, cheesy aroma will give her away to any nosey neighbors.

I smoke Blue Cheese on a regular basis and the effects you described are completely unrealistic. I smoke for chronic leg pain and muscle spasms and the effects are extremely beneficial. Rather than taking pain medication of any type and using it as an alternative to surgeries is why I do.
It’s posts and responses like this that create the stigma and stereotypes against marijuana and those who smoke it. It doesn’t take you half the day to come back to reality because you never leave reality. I can smoke this and be completely productive throughout the day and if anything this post (no offense) is irresponsible and ignorant.

Blue Cheese took me on an out of body, out of mind experience.. I forgot I was human.. Then I was mad cause I wanted to be human. I was gone..It took me half the day to come back to reality..I even saw my kids..I hallucinated.. I was past stoned..I recomitted myself to my girlfriend.I told her my secrets..Blue Cheese was amazing..I did get sick but that was my own fault. I didn’t eat anything..Blue cheese is not for those who can’t handle the high..the high was like something out of the movies.. Thought I was gonna die for a few minutes.. Awesome experience…
